Detox 101: February 28th by Mary Anne Duffus
Written by Brookesfield School. Categories: MyBlog Tags: Nutrition
Well, I have finished my 48 hour Master Cleanse. It was a great experience and surprised me in so many ways.
Who would think that you could actually enjoy not eating much but some steamed veggies once or twice a day for two straight days and just drink tea or water, lemon, cayenne pepper and maple syrup? Well I did and it was very therapeutic.
Now that it is over, I am going slow reintroducing foods and eating less than I did before the cleanse. Gradual reentry is good.
The official day to start is tomorrow and some of you have let me know that you will be doing it next week. The ODA trip this weekend has affected some plans.
If anyone is doing it this weekend and wants some support, please let me know!
Love to hear from you and how you are doing!
It is fun to share your journey!
Take Care and Be Well!

Literary Arts Week begins March 11th!

Literary Arts celebration begins March 11th
Did you know that the well-known children’s author and illustrator Mo Willems kicked off his career as a writer and animator for Sesame Street and earned six Emmy Awards? During Brooksfield School's annual Literary Arts Celebration, students in both the Lower and Upper Schools will learn this and much more about Willems, whose books have awarded the prestigious Caldecott Honors. On Wednesday, March 13th, the students will hear how local children’s author Susan Stockdale approaches the writing process. Be sure to attend the Assembly on Thursday, March 14th to see the children's Willems-based art and presentations. Also, Brooksfield will host a book drive all week. Please help your child choose some gently-used books for the boxes we will have stationed at carpool from the 11th through the 15th. We will be donating the books to INOVA Children’s Hospital.
Detox 101: February, 28th by Mary Anne Duffus

Hi to tour Group!
I am on day 2 of the modified Master Cleanse.
This morning my alarm was not necessary. I was up and out before it went off!
The dry brushing was really helpful and the hot shower felt great.
Journaling is good because a lot is coming up that certainly hasn't had the time or space to come up before.
My days are busier than I would like but the thermos is filled with the cleanse and my mind feels super sharp!
The hunger comes and goes so riding that wave is interesting. No specific food cravings at this time.
Hopefully some of you are going to do the cleanse and if you can't this weekend, let me know and I will be happy to coach you through at a later date.
For me, it has already had so many benefits, it will become a regular routine to my seasons changing.
Take Care and be well!

Detox 101: February 26th by Mary Anne Duffus

We are going to start a Detox as a group on Friday. We have choices to make about which one suits us best.
I have chosen The Master Cleanse by Paul Pitchford because I want to try something new that I have done before. So far, so good. In order to lead the group, I wanted to start a little earlier and give you the highlights of what comes up and how to move through it.
There are brief moments of hunger but they have passed quickly. Also a good reminder to drink the cleanse of spring water, lemon, cayenne pepper and Grade B Organic Maple Syrup. I get busy and forget to drink more!
It does not help to drive by any food stores or restaurants! That increased the challenge! When feelings of being cool or empty come up, warm herbal tea has hit the spot! It is interesting to ride the waves and see what your body is telling you.
Also remember that you will be running to the bathroom a lot so book that into your schedule!
Looking forward to getting your feedback when you start on Friday!
Dear Detox101 Friends!
I wanted to touch base with you as we are now getting closer to our date of starting the Detox Program. This morning I made a green smoothie in an effort to get in my antioxidants with Sun is Shining, a green superfood supplement. This smoothie supports your immune system on a snowy grey day. It provides all the nutrients of a green food which is rich in probiotics and it enhances your digestion as well as your nutrient absorption.
I will share with you what I put into my VitaMix.
Mary Anne's Mid-February Green Pick-me-up
Half of a banana
A few chunks of pineapple
1 teaspoon of Organic Coconut Oil
1 cup of water mixed with coconut water
Dash of cinnamon
1 teaspoon of Camu Powder
1 teaspoon of Lacuma Powder
Ice cubes
Voila! A gorgeous green refresher and great way to start your day. To add protein to this morning elixir, I am having a Chia Seed, Buckwheat and Hemp Cereal that has 6g of protein, 4g of fiber and 2,2g of ALA Omega 3's.
A Powerhouse Breakfast!

Since I have the organizing gene, anytime I can improve a system or process
or use something in a new way that saves time or somehow is better, it is always something to celebrate. I have been singing the praises of my new found treasure, the App, CardStar.
My purse got about 5 pounds lighter thanks to an organizing friend who
introduced me to it. CardStar holds digitally all of the plastic cards and key
tabs that many stores and restaurants entice us with to get discounts. Viola,
my wallet is not overstuffed and my three key rings (yes, I have three) can now just hold keys because all of the plastic cards and key tags can be left home!
In addition to the convenience of not having to carry all of the extra plastic,
CardStar saves us time too as it organizes the cards alphabetically so there is
no more hunting for the right loyalty card - as they are all available, in alpha
order, in the same place, once you put them on your phone. Every person I have shared the App with has the same excited reaction I did because anything to lighten our wallets and purses is something to cheer about.
Over spring break my kids and I biked into Old Town from the Belle Haven
Marina heading to Ben & Jerry's for "Free Cone Day". I realize the cone
negated the exercise! After ordering our cones, my son picked up the new Belly card, which apparently many merchants are going to start offering. Belly is a type of loyalty card that is tied into points and of course more points,
equals more saving and in the case of Ben & Jerry's incentives to buy more
cones. Normally, I would have to be sold on its value, since I knew nothing
about it, but I knew with my CardStar App, I could just scan it and be done with it.
I think we all download popular Apps and we use them a few times and then
they sit on our phones. This is not one of those Apps, trust me you will be
using it regularly and you'll be spreading the word too.
Okay, now my mission is to learn about Evernote and how to use it. More on
that later....
Richard Louv: "The Nature Principle"
Written by sara. Categories: MyBlog Tags: Brooksfield, Brooksfield School

Mary Anne with National Bestselling Author, Richard Louv. Louv is best known for his book, "Last Child in the Woods". He has just published,"The Nature Principle" which addresses reconnecting with life in a virtual age.
We have an autographed copy in the office for parents to borrow. Louv's urge to us at Brooksfield is to keep up our good work AND to not only support sustainability but to also CREATE MORE NATURE. Join us in brainstorming on this topic!
She also had a birthday party at the end of February so we have been working on her thank you notes at the kitchen table. Of course an active 7 year old can only do a few at a time, so the box of notes has remained on the counter to be available when inspiration struck. We finally sat down this weekend and she did a great job finishing them all. The box of notes is now put away!
Other paper on the counter are current work and personal projects of mine that instead of being in my office, on another level of my home, are on the counter as I now tend to use my laptop instead of the desktop in my office. I went to the Container Store last week and got a small desktop file that holds all of my current files. I repositioned some kitchen serving bowls to another area so that I could hide my new kitchen file. And now, no more papers on the counter.
Speaking of papers, awhile back I wrote about the paper reduction service, Catalog Choice (see my January 1st blog). Apparently now the company has an app now only available for the iphone which enables the user to take a picture of the unwanted mail and then request Catalog Choice to get them off of the mailing list. You may want to check this out and let me know what you think.
So my paper is now tamed and off the counters, and I swear it has given me such a boost. Here's to a great productive week.

We have had the unfortunate experience of having to deal with a lice infestation in my daughter’s class room at school. This means of course, she has brought them home. To get rid of them is a bear because not only do you have to spend hours cleaning and combing through the infected head to try to find the nits (lice eggs), but you have to clean and remove from the environment everything that mirrors hair (blankets, rugs and of course the plethora of stuffed animals)! So, the good news is we have been lice free for several weeks now (though they are still in her classroom).
With the mild weather we had a few weeks ago it seemed like everyone in our neighborhood decorated for the holidays early. I like decorating our home for Christmas, but because we get a live tree, we can’t decorate too early. My husband took the many holiday bins down from our attic right after Thanksgiving (ugh!), and I have been dealing with the wall of bins for a few weeks now. We got our tree last Saturday and finally put our decorations up!
The other day I was in our basement and I looked out to our screened in porch and saw several large bags and then remembered they were full of stuffed animals from my daughter’s room and the lice saga. I decided I would try to see if she could part with some of them discussing the importance of the gift of charity and the need to think of others. Low and behold my little six year old was up for donating, but also making a little money too. She negotiated $2.00 from me (okay, I got off easy), and gave away two full bags of stuffed animals to the Lupus Society! She still has way too many stuffed animals in her room, but at least she sorted them and the ones she is keeping she treasures for different reasons.
As we enter the season where we will be adding many new things to our homes, it is always helpful to remember to remove 2-3 items for everything added. If you can do a quick sort and purge now in each room in your home it will benefit you in several ways. It’ll help get your home ready for the holidays and company and also prepare space for the new things you may be bringing in or receiving as gifts.
Good luck as you wrap up the year and get ready for the holidays.

New Year's Organizing Tip #2 - Where does it go?
Written by Karen Gardiner. Categories: MyBlog Tags:Okay, now that you have purged all of the old paper and
clutter from your rooms it is time to organize them.
The best way to get organized and stay that way is to zone
your rooms and assign a home to every object.
Sounds like a lot of work, but it isn't really. So, for example in the family room, common activities may be playing video games, watching t.v., reading and relaxing. Objects you will need to contain are video games, DVDs, books, remote controls, wraps and throws, etc. Start one room at a time and find a
home for everything. Once you have a home for EVERYTHING then literally it should take less than 10 minutes to pick up several rooms in your home.
The harder clutter to contain is paper because it can quickly become overwhelming and look worse than it is if it isn't processed every day. Know the pattern of the paper in your house and have a home for each category - bills, regular files, resource/archival files, magazines, action, etc. As I wrote about in my first New Year's post, have a paper command center in the hub of your home to corral everyday paper and then have a resource/archival home...probably a home office where you have a filing cabinet to hold paper you don't need as often.
My gym has a motivational message on the door entering the gym, "the hardest part is showing up" and I feel this thought can be applied to
organizing. Organizing is a process, like exercising, that you can't just do once to see results. Once the hard part is done (the zoning and
assigning homes), then the regular "showing up" part becomes the daily
processing of stuff that can be done almost in auto pilot. I smiled reading the inspirational message leaving the gym yesterday "know you'll be back tomorrow" and I liked the simple message that progress is in small steps, many times repeated until it becomes like second nature.

Make Your Own Green Cleaning Products, Straight from Your Kitchen
Written by Adrienne Spahr. Categories: MyBlog Tags: Brooksfield, green living consulting, green cleaning, Toxic Substances Control Act, vinegar, baking soda, lemon juice, toxic chemicalsAfter a busy summer of interns and putting together new green living resources, I am back to Brooksfield blogging and sharing green living tips good for people and the planet. If you ever have specific green living questions, please send a message to info AT greenlivingconsulting.com.
This month's blog is from a recent post I did on greendailygrind.com before a presentation at a local festival in DC.
Making Your Own Green Cleaning Products
Many natural ingredients found in your kitchen can double as safe and effective cleaning products. These cleaners are inexpensive and non-toxic to use, creating healthier homes in the cleaning process.
Why Should We Be Concerned with Our Cleaning Products?
Well, here are a few facts that got my attention:
There are an estimated 80,000 different chemical compounds in use, of which 4000-8000 are estimated to trigger cancer.
The average household contains anywhere from 3 to 25 gallons of toxic materials.
Of the roughly 17,000 chemicals used in household products, only about 30% have been adequately tested for their effects on human health.
According to The International Agency for Research on Cancer, 80% of all cancers are attributable to environmental influences.
Cleaning products are often defined as Hazardous Waste: Any material (gas, liquid or solid) discarded from the home that may, due to its chemical nature, pose a health threat to people, animals and the environment if handled or disposed of improperly. When you dispose of your cleaning products in landfills or down the drain, you negatively affect: fish, birds, soil, air, the water supply, and human health.
Toxic substances has become such a concern that it is currently in the National Spotlight. Currently there are two reform bills in Congress which would improve on the 1976 Toxic Substances Control Act:
- Require industries to prove safety of chemicals
- Require basic information about all chemicals
- Suggest a program for the EPA to identify and clean up hot spots in the country where chemical exposure is particularly high
The House bill requires the EPA to take action on the 40 worst chemicals within the next year. One of the other reasons for public concern is that the current Act excludes cosmetics, food, drugs, and pesticides, and the EPA has only tested about 200 of the 60,000 - 80,000 chemicals in production in the marketplace. (Get more information on the proposed reform through various organizations: Healthy Child, Healthy World, Safer Chemicals, Healthy Families and Occupational Health and Safety)
With so much unknown and needed reform still in the legislative process, we are better off at the moment taking matters into our hands. One way to do that is to make your own cleaning products with ingredients you can trust, and probably have in your kitchen right now.
Clean from your Cupboard: Green Cleaning Recipes and Tips
Vinegar
Vinegar naturally cleans like an all-purpose cleaner. Mix a solution of 1 part water to 1 part vinegar in a new store bought spray bottle and you have a solution that will clean most areas of your home. Vinegar is a great natural cleaning product as well as a disinfectant and deodorizer. Always test on an inconspicuous area. It is safe to use on most surfaces and has the added bonus of being incredibly cheap. Improperly diluted vinegar is acidic and can eat away at tile grout. Never use vinegar on marble surfaces. Don't worry about your home smelling like vinegar. The smell disappears when it dries. Here are some uses for vinegar in the rooms of your house:
- Bathroom - Clean the bathtub, toilet, sink, and countertops. Use pure vinegar in the toilet bowl to get rid of rings. Flush the toilet to allow the water level to go down. Pour the undiluted vinegar around the inside of the rim. Scrub down the bowl. Mop the floor in the bathroom with a vinegar/water solution. The substance will also eat away the soap scum and hard water stains on your fixtures and tile. Make sure it is safe to use with your tile.
- Kitchen- Clean the stovetop, appliances, countertops, and floor.
- Laundry Room- Use vinegar as a natural fabric softener. This can be especially helpful for families who have sensitive skin. Add ½ cup of vinegar to the rinse cycle in place of store bought fabric softener. Vinegar has the added benefit of breaking down laundry detergent more effectively. (A plus when you have a family member whose skin detects every trace of detergent.)
Lemon Juice
Lemon juice can be used to dissolve soap scum and hard water deposits, as well as to clean and shine brass and copper. It can be mixed with vinegar and or baking soda to make cleaning pastes. Cut a lemon in half and sprinkle baking soda on the cut section. Use the lemon to scrub dishes, surfaces, and stains. You can also put a whole lemon peel through the garbage disposal to freshen the drain.
Baking Soda
Baking soda can be used to scrub surfaces in much the same way as commercial abrasive cleansers. Baking soda is great as a deodorizer. Place a box in the refrigerator and freezer to absorb odors. Put it anywhere you need deodorizing action.
3% Hydrogen Peroxide
Hydrogen Peroxide is yet another fabulous wonder in the non-toxic world. It can be used for numerous things in the home and can even get rid of mold! Its properties are anti-bacterial, anti-fungal and it can get rid of viruses. You can even use a capful daily as mouthwash. No more canker sores and your teeth will be whiter without expensive pastes! Pour 1 cup in your rinse cycle for some great white action as well.
Jojoba/Olive Oil
Mix together 1 cup jojoba/olive oil and 1/2 cup lemon juice to create a homemade furniture polish. Mix together in a clean new spray bottle. To use, remember to shake before each application. Apply a small portion to your cleaning cloth. Spread the polish over the furniture, trying to polish evenly. Use another clean cloth to polish the surface dry.
Here are a few more useful ingredients to have in your house, along with their uses:
- Carnauba/Beeswax - floor and furniture wax
- Borax-deodorizer - all-purpose cleaner, rust-stain removal
- Toothpaste - metal polisher
- Washing soda (sodium carbonate) - grease and grime cutter, wax remover and deodorizer
- Citrus Fruits - disinfectant, grease cutter, deodorizer, flea repellent
- Eucalyptus/Neem Tree Oils - insect repellent
- Lavender Oil - disinfectant, deodorizer
- Tea Tree Oil - anti-bacterial, -fungal, and -viral, deodorizer
- Natural Vegetable-based Liquid Soap - grease and grime cutter, wax remover and deodorizer

Holiday Shopping
Written by Karen Gardiner. Categories: MyBlog Tags: holiday shopping, wrap up your shopping quickly, minimize stressHoliday Shopping
Here it is December 10th and I don't have my holiday shopping list together. What? A professional organizer who doesn't have her shopping done, wrapped and ready to go by December 1st? I am a little bit behind this year, but being a very practical person, I tend to give practical gifts, so I figure it isn't going to take me too long to do my shopping. I also have been known to buy in quantity, if I like something, and then give it out as my signature gift. One year I gave everyone a coupon, saving Entertainment book tailored for their part of the country and another year everyone got a pizza stone with pizza fixings.
Here are some ideas to wrap up your shopping quickly to minimize stress so that you can really enjoy this special time of year.
1. Think about giving some high quality chocolate, coffee, wine or other consumable gift in a fun, festive container that the recipient can reuse.
2. If you are a baker, make some candy or other treat and create a fun label to show that you made it. You can buy a dish or unique container to hold your homemade treat.
3. Everyone is going to be thinking of getting organized after the holidays so give a gift card to the Container Store along with one of their unique stocking stuffers.
4. It appears that fondue is back in and the fondue pots are smaller and more attractive. Bed Bath and Beyond and Crate and Barrel have nice options.
5. An easy way to knock out shopping quickly is to personalize a gift card, which is the way I am going this year. For example, most people like to read, so along with a book store gift card, give one of your favorite inspirational books, a unique book mark, or reading light. Also, have you seen those puzzle/maze gift card holders where the gift card is placed inside and the recipient has to solve the maze to open the gift card holder? I did pick up several of those at Bed, Bath and Beyond.
6. Another great gift idea is to buy a Washington ornament such as the White House ornament, Mt. Vernon or Congressional ornament.
I don't mean to minimize the importance of finding appropriate gifts. There are those expert shoppers out there that truly enjoy personalizing and finding just the right gift for everyone. I think as the years go on, it gets harder and harder to do so, and in some respects the gift giving becomes the emphasis, instead of the holiday, and time shared together with family and friends. I think the more we can think of ways to simplify our shopping, the less stress we will feel and we'll enjoy this special season more.
I wish you luck finishing up your shopping and hope that I start and finish mine up quickly!

Project Bud Burst
Written by Brenda Kouyoumdjian. Categories: MyBlog Tags: green school, green school mclean, Project Bud Burst, climate change, green education mclean, montessori green schoolYour observations can become valuable data for climate change and environmental researchers by participating in Project BudBurst. Project BudBurst is a nation- wide effort to record phenology events that help research scientists better understand changes in our environment. There are many opportunities for citizen scientists to participate in this important work. The Project Bud Burst website has detailed information on how families and schools can participate. In fact, children comprised the largest group of people reporting data for Project Bud Burst last year! Get started by going outside and looking for new sprouts or blooms that appeared over night. See what others are recording on the website, or on their own web pages. What a great way to get your kids outdoors and observing nature.
Here are just a few of the blooms in my yard this month
